Profile
The Ensemble Company, the repertory theatre company in residence at Imagine Performing Arts Center, will open its seventh season with John Logan’s Tony Award-winning RED.
Master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New York’s famed Four Seasons Restaurant. In the two fascinating years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his young assistant, Ken, in his studio on the Bowery. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing. Raw and provocative, RED is a searing portrait of an artist’s ambition and vulnerability as he tries to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting.
RED was first produced by the Donmar Warehouse in London in 2018, in a production directed by Michael Grandage and starring Alfred Molina as Rothko and Eddie Redmayne as Ken. The production transferred to Broadway’s John Golden Theatre in 2010, where it won six Tony Awards including wins for Grandage and Redmayne. In 2018, Molina reprised his role opposite Alfred Enoch in a London revival that was filmed for PBS’s Great Performances.
The Ensemble Company’s production of RED will be directed by associate artistic director Gabriel Garcia (A Christmas Carol, In the Next Room…) and star Ensemble Company veterans Thomas Muniz (Other Desert Cities, Mother of the Maid, Six Degrees of Separation, Misery, Hysteria, It’s Only A Play, A Christmas Carol) as Rothko and Scott Leavitt (In the Next Room…, Suddenly Last Summer) as Ken. The production will be production stage managed by Jessica Hamilton and include scenic design and construction from Bonnie Sprung.
RED will run January 24-February 2, 2025 in the Barbara Lynn Johnson Theatre at Imagine Performing Arts Center (1220 Oviedo Mall Boulevard, Oviedo, FL 32765), with performances on Friday and Saturday at 8:00pm, Sundays at 2:00pm, and a special industry night performance on Monday, January 27th at 8:00pm. Tickets are $22 for adults, $20 for seniors (60 and up), and $18 for students (with I.D.) and are available for purchase by visiting www.imagineperformingartscenter.org/events.
